CropX has made its eighth acquisition since 2020, buying SCIO, a maker of portable near-infrared spectroscopy devices. The company announced the deal on 26 August 2026 without disclosing the price. The attraction is a link between advice given during cultivation and measurements taken at harvest.
SCIO’s devices measure moisture, protein, oil and sugar content in crops. Its range includes the handheld SCIO Mini, the SCIO Cup for testing grain and sensors fitted to combines. The business has 44 granted patents and has raised $64 million since it began, giving CropX both a product line and a body of research to absorb.
CropX chief executive Tomer Tzach said, “SCIO gives us the missing piece.” The acquisition also brings 25 staff working across software, hardware and data science, he said. Whether their tools can be integrated into CropX’s subscription offering, and how quickly, remains an open question.
According to AgFunder News, the consideration combines shares, cash and debt. About 10,000 SCIO devices are deployed worldwide, and Tzach described that business as profitable. CropX, meanwhile, is nearing $20 million in annual recurring subscription revenue. Those figures suggest scale, though they do not establish how much the new devices will add to subscriptions.
No timetable for integrating SCIO has been disclosed. Tzach told AgFunder News that 2027 is a safe bet for CropX to become profitable. The deal gives the company more measurements from the field; turning them into a profitable service is the next test.
