Agtonomy has expanded its commercial farm autonomy platform with autonomous multipoint turning, support for more than 500 implements and additional data tools. Announced in August, the update allows equipped vehicles to make reversing maneuvers without an operator.
The South San Francisco company supplies autonomy packages for vehicles built by manufacturing partners rather than producing tractors itself. Its partners include Kubota, whose M5N tractor is being equipped for automated specialty-crop work, initially focused on spraying. The turning feature is intended for confined headlands in orchards and vineyards.
Alongside vehicle control, the company is expanding access to operational data. Agtonomy says each vehicle running its software processes more than 2 terabytes an hour, collected passively and anonymized. Qualified partners, including agronomy and analytics providers, can use the information for crop analysis and fleet management.
Implement compatibility has also widened. Supported equipment ranges from air-blast sprayers and disc harrows to precision toolbars, with the Agtonomy Implement Library providing a standard route for integrating additional tools. The library connects the software platform with the equipment used for different field tasks.
At Okanagan Specialty Fruits, Agtonomy-enabled equipment performs all orchard crop-data collection jobs, according to orchard operations manager Joel Carter. He said vehicles can work through the night at a consistent speed. He said the approach has improved fuel efficiency and cut the labor and cost needed for data collection.
Carter said the resulting information supports yield counts and crop-canopy management, among other orchard assessments. Agtonomy chief executive and co-founder Tim Bucher described commercial operation and product development as a continuous loop. His stated objective is an autonomous fleet that can operate now while gaining further capabilities over time.
