As agriculture continues to evolve in a world driven by technology, Dr. Haipeng Yu is helping guide innovative research at the bridge between animal science, genetics and artificial intelligence (AI). Dr. Yu’s work focuses on integrating AI, genetics, and data-driven approaches to solve complex challenges facing animal agriculture through his role as an assistant professor in the UF/IFAS Department of Animal Sciences.

Meet Dr. Yu

His research focuses on applying artificial intelligence (AI) and statistical modeling to address challenges in animal agriculture. He also specializes in quantitative genetics, a field that studies how genetic and environmental factors influence traits in animals. His research interests include multi-omics integration for genetic improvement and AI-based precision livestock farming.

Dr. Yu’s academic background reflects a strong foundation in animal science, genetics, and data science. He earned his Ph.D. in Quantitative Genetics from Virginia Tech in 2020, his M.S. in Animal Breeding and Genetics from North Dakota State University in 2016, and his B.S. in Veterinary Medicine from Qingdao Agricultural University in 2013. Before joining the University of Florida, he completed his postdoctoral training at Iowa State University from 2020 to 2022, where he further developed his expertise in quantitative genetics and animal breeding.

Advancing Animal Agriculture Through Data

The main goal of Dr. Yu’s research program is to integrate high-dimensional biological data using AI and statistical modeling to address emerging challenges in animal agriculture. By combining information from genetics, genomics and other complex biological systems, his lab develops innovative approaches to support genetic improvement in livestock, contributing to better animal health, productivity, and sustainability.

Dr. Yu’s work demonstrates how artificial intelligence can be used to better understand animals and improve livestock production systems. Through data-driven analytics, Dr. Yu is helping to discover patterns and insights that would be difficult to identify through traditional methods alone.

Applying AI to Precision Livestock Farming

One area of Dr. Yu’s research that is especially exciting involves AI-based precision livestock farming, which combines AI with digital sensing technologies to monitor animals and improve management decisions in real time. His lab uses sensing technologies such as cameras and wearable sensors, along with AI-based methods, to automatically collect timely and individualized information about animals. These approaches generate large amounts of data that can be analyzed using advanced AI algorithms to support more informed and efficient livestock management practices.

Why It Matters

Together, these research efforts can help improve animal health monitoring, enhance animal welfare assessments, support data-driven management decisions, and increase production efficiency. By integrating artificial intelligence and statistical modeling with genomic and other biological data, Dr. Yu’s research also aims to improve genetic evaluation and selection and advance sustainable livestock production systems.

Preparing Future Animal Scientists

In addition to his research efforts, Dr. Yu is dedicated to educating the next generation of animal scientists. Through both teaching and mentorship, he helps students develop the skills needed to thrive in an increasingly data-driven agricultural industry, emphasizing how emerging technologies can be integrated with traditional animal science disciplines to develop new solutions for animal agriculture.

As the livestock industry continues to become more innovative and adopt new technologies, Dr. Yu’s research is helping bridge the gap between animal science and artificial intelligence, ensuring that future advancements are rooted in both scientific discovery and practical application.
